What is blepharoplasthy?

Blepharoplasthy, also know as eyelids surgery, it is a procedure that aims to rejuvenate the eyes area, removing the excess of fat and skin that cause a tired look. This surgery can be performed in both upper and lower eyelids, the last one it is also called as lower blepharoplasty.

For upper eyelid an incision is made through the groove of the eyes, where the skin fold, with the objective to camoflage the scar then proceed to remove both the fat pockets and the excess skin to then suture it.

For lower eyelids there are two options, if there are a lot of excess of skin, an incision is made through the fold skin, close to the eyelashes line, then proceed to remove both the fat pockets and excess of skin to then suture it. If there are not excess of skin but there are big fat pockets, as is the case of young people, it can be performed a lower transconjunctival blepharoplasty, in this procedure, the insicion is made inside the eyelid to removed the fat pockets, therefore, leaves no visible scars.

What are the postoperative care?

Being an outpatient surgery, the patient does not require hospitalization, but a disability of at least 5 days. The first 4 days patient will feel heavyness and swelling around the eyes, it is good to apply ice or cold packs, being carefull to not burn the skin with cold, at third day,tha patient can apply warm cloths to decrease swelling.

It is very important to not perform activities that require much visual effort, you must also avoid sun exposure and sleep with your head elevated and face up to help the healing process.

After one week, the stiches will be removed, and the patient can resume almost all their normal activities, but need to avoid make intense exercises, it is very important to keep using sunscreen to avoid exposing the area of the eyes to direct sunlight, so you will have to wear sunglasses or a hat.

You can not apply eye makeup until the surgeon indicates it, and if you use contact lenses, you can not use them for two weeks, also, it is important to not enter pools during this period to avoid risks of infection.

After the third week, the patient can resume all their activities normally, but they still need to use sunscreen. During this period the scars still being red, but with the passing of the time and the right cares the skin will return to their normal color.
